CRAFT Fact Sheet

In 1994, the U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and
Training Administration awarded a Youth Offender Demonstration Grant
to Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of the
National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Project CRAFT combined
seven components from proven vocational training programs targeted to
adult offenders, homeless men and women and economically disadvantaged
youth.

TRADE Fact Sheet

Project TRADE (Training, Restitution, Apprenticeship Development
Employment), a program designed to train and place adult
ex-offenders. Project TRADE began as a demonstration program
implemented in North Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon and North
Carolina. Currently, TRADE is implemented in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, Project TRADE also operates in Sheridan, Illinois and in
Ocala, Florida.

Project HEART (Homeless Employment and Related Training) began as a
model pilot program implemented over five years in ten cities. The
program was designed to train and place homeless men and women in
the residential construction industry. Through Project HEART many
people have found jobs in the home building industry where they earn
a living wage and maintain an established career.

HOPE Fact Sheet

Project HOPE (Home Building Opportunities for Positive Employment)
was established to offer trades training and job placement services
to people with disabilities. Working with local HBAs, HBI connects
the needs of local vocational rehabilitation clients with the
workforce needs of the membership and labor-strapped housing
industry. From administrative office support personnel to framers
and carpenters, the home building industry has provided people with
disabilities access to rewarding, long-term careers through Project
HOPE.

HBI and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s
Youthbuild Program have teamed up to offer thousands of low income
youth access to industry- sponsored vocational training and the
opportunity to build a career in residential construction.
