Construction Career Choices
Home Builders Institute (HBI) is the workforce development arm of
the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). NAHB is a
federation of more than 800 state and local associations. About
one-third of NAHB’s 225,000 members are home builders and/or
remodelers. The remaining members are associates working in closely
related fields within the housing industry, such as mortgage finance
and building products and services.
Construction is one of the nation’s largest industries with 8.3
million workers. By the year 2012 there will be a need for an
additional 1.1 million special trades contractors. This does not
include the management, supervisory and other professional
positions. The majority of builders are small companies. It is
well known that construction offers more opportunities than most
other industries for individuals who want to own and run their own
businesses. There are also large corporations that operate in as
many as 90 markets in 26 or more states and some have more than
11,000 employees. Some fields in construction are well known such
as carpentry, plumbing and site supervision. The industry also
wants students to explore some of the lesser known fields such as
home integration technology, land acquisition, forward planning,
roofing inspection, warranty coordination and window treatment
design. The list is full of exciting opportunities. There are more
