careers initiative provides a much needed gateway for Home Builder
Associations, NAHB members, educators, students, parents and other
interested parties to access the construction industry.
About Construction Industry
The
construction of 1,000 single-family homes generates 2,448 jobs in
construction and construction-related industries; approximately $79.4
million in wages; and more than $42.5 million in federal, state and
local tax revenues and fees. Residential construction offers multiple

- Make It Happen with HBI - Home
Builders Institute, the workforce development arm of the National
Association of Home Builders, is dedicated to the advancement and
enrichment of education and training programs serving the needs of
the housing industry. For more than 40 years, HBI has trained
skilled workers in residential construction, promoted the industry
as a career and helped the NAHB membership address its need for
qualified employees.
- Student Chapters - The NAHB Student Chapters Program
provides students in building-related fields such as construction
management, engineering, architecture, real estate and the trades an
opportunity to learn more about residential building through
membership in the industry’s largest trade association.
- Career Clusters
- The
Architecture & Construction Career Cluster includes the following
industries – architecture, commercial, industrial and residential
construction. The Career Cluster initiative provides an organizing
tool for schools, small learning communities, academies and magnet
schools.
- Job Corps - HBI
has trained Job Corps students in the construction trades for
careers in the building industry since 1974. Job Corps students
receive hands-on training from professionals in the industry, for
professionals in the industry.
- Craft Skills -
Pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training in residential
construction are offered through HBI’s Craft Skills programs. Craft
programs are public/private partnerships.
- Building Today's Workforce for
Tomorrow - HBI and its partners will create a
systemic approach to construction industry workforce development
that provides a continuum of recruitment, career exploration,
education, and training.

Programs-At-A-Glance
Local Home Builder Associations (HBAs) throughout the country have
developed industry/education partnership programs that are
educationally enriched, challenging and creative. Programs provide
middle and high school age students with information about the
industry and have an impact on career choices during these critical
career decision-making years. These educationally enriched,
challenging and creative HBA partnerships also include adult
training programs.
Construction Career Choices
Construction is one of the nation’s largest industries with 8.3
million workers. By the year 2012 there will be a need for an
additional 1.1 million special trades contractors this does not
include the management, supervisory and other professional
positions. The majority of builders are small companies, however
there are large corporations that operate in as many as 90 markets
in 26 or more states and some have as many as 11,000 employees.

- Lesson Plan Course
Ideas and Workbook - Virtually every subject in
the high school setting can be put in the context of the
home building process. The activities and exercises in the
lesson plans were developed by educators and are provided as
idea starters and examples of ways you can introduce home
building topics. The course includes a hands-on building
project. Best of all, it’s not “extra work.” The format is
easily adaptable to fit your current curriculum. A workbook
is included to assist with planning.
- Developing
Industry/Educational Partnerships - Use the Planning
Guide and Workbook to establish a uniquely designed program
that enables students to gain career awareness and academic
enrichment. The design differs from many other
career/education programs because it is based on forming
partnerships between schools and professionals from the

Career Cluster. The Architecture & Construction Career
Cluster provides an organizing tool for schools, small
learning communities, academies and magnet schools.
Residential Construction
Curriculum - Based on national standards set by
the residential construction industry, the Residential
Construction Academy Series is the result of a partnership
between Home Builders Institute and Thomson Delmar Learning.
This series is the perfect way to guide learners to
development of essential workplace skills, in the areas of
carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and facilities
maintenance. The goal is a skilled, knowledgeable workforce
able to meet the needs of the industry today and into the
future.
Superintendent Training
- What builder, contractor or remodeler hasn’t wished for
personnel with the requisite skills to be savvy, on-the-spot
field superintendents?

Residential Construction Superintendent Designation -
The Residential Construction Superintendent series of
courses are geared toward budding field superintendents and
can benefit current site personnel wishing to excel in this
position. Eight courses cover issues and subjects identified
by NAHB members as critical to a field or site supervisory
job. Upon successful completion of all eight courses – each
four hours in length – a Residential Construction
Superintendent designation is awarded.

Concrete Specialization Courses - The Concrete
Specialization Courses are modeled after HBI’s Residential
Construction Superintendent (RCS) designation, which is
similarly geared toward budding field superintendents and
can benefit current site personnel wishing to excel in this
position. The Concrete Specialization Courses are designed
to educate superintendents on the core fundamentals of
concrete construction.

Division’s mission is to provide accessible, relevant, high
